CA Boom 4
CA Boom 4 was this weekend! It was a cool little modern/contemporary design show at the Barker Hanger in the Santa Monica Airport. After a nice drive up the 405 I met Dave and PA at the event. Registering at the computers was very comdex like, reminds me of self checkout at the grocery store, sometimes I’d rather have someone else enter in all that info. Anyways, we gave the cashier our 20 bucks and ventured inside. The show was small in area but full of interesting eyecandy. The exhibits ranged from furniture designers, furniture distributors, architectural firms, building materials, appliances and other home goods. It was not unlike the modernism show help in Palm Springs each year, I think some of the exhibitors were the same as well.
Cool Glowing tubes above the open area where the bar and DJ are.
This glowing lav was a neat idea, however due to the method of construction there was a joint between the basin and the translucent acrylic top that would be a nightmare to clean!
A cool wall hung art piece made from Purple Heart and some small metal goodies… Purple Heart, my fav!
This upper kitchen cabinet hinges on the top rather than on the jambs! As traditional cabinets hinge on the the sides this is a good re-invent of an everyday object. Although I’m not sure how practical it is as the door gets fairly high when fully open… “got step stool?”
And finally the ever present tokenism of modern design the “curved plywood” side tables…is this played out yet?
(Now that I’ve said that I’m sure ownership of such a item will be in my near future.)
All in all the show was good, PA liked this weird pod bed cocoon thing that reminded me a bit of Mork and Mindy, it looks as though it was inspired by but not as cool as the classic “Egg Chair.” It was so shallow that it would be impossible to sit up in, so maneuvering in and out of it would more appropriate for frequenters of yoga class. *Edit* Found a pic!
Surprisingly Dave enjoyed the show also, except his eye was more focused on the female attendees and spokes-women.
Thank you CA Boom, twas fun! Even though I pick on some of these designs, they were inventive, stylish and attractive…that’s why i took pics of them! See you there next year!
